"Summer in the City" - Regina Spektor

 "I start to miss you, baby, sometimes".


So we all know that this winter has been the absolute worst. I mean, really. Enough? Enough with the snow? Please? I'd like to have it be summer now, please. But I suppose all I can do until this frozen garbage melts it lust over spring trends and plan my ensembles in advance. What better to ring in the warmer season than this delightful Chloe frock? The salmon color is perfectly lovely and I added the jacket because, who are we kidding. As much as I'd love to jump head first out of winter, I know it's going to take some easing into.


We also know that summer is about showing off how much we worked our ass off for a killer beach body. I myself have a plan to do some intense bikram yoga and diet of primarily nonprocessed foods (ugh, do I sound like I'm writing for GOOP right now? Sorry.) to get myself ready for a little trip to Mexico. But whether there's an actual trip planned or not, I think motivation can also come from the possibility of seeing that someone that you used to love. Fantasies of casually running errands and passing on the street, looking utterly fabulous. "Oh this? It's nothing, just a little something I threw together - felt appropriate for this great weather we've been having! But how are YOU?"


That's the external. But that doesn't always match what going on in our head. This song is heartbreakingly beautiful in its tales of loneliness. "I've been hallucinating you, babe/In the backs of other women/And the tops of their shoulders/And they turn around and smile and/There's no recognition in their eyes". It's some of the saddest nostalgia to imagine, but I can't not love it.


"And don't get me wrong,  dear/In general, I'm doing quite fine."

"Kiss With A Fist" - Florence and the Machine

Tough girl chic - a look that says "Do not mess with me unless you're looking to have your face stepped on by my [literally] killer stilettos, but also, don't I looking bangin'?" Contradictory, sure. Though that's not necessarily the intent.  The intent is to look fabulous and strong. Knowing who you are and owning your independence. 


I hesitate to love Florence and the Machine's "Kiss with a Fist", since the message is, essentially, that it's better to be in an abusive relationship than no relationship at all. But I don't think that's all it's about. I think it's about owning one's independence. Knowing that you have full control of your life and your choices, which is something that I wholeheartedly believe. It's about getting what you want and taking no prisoners. It's a more violent take on that philosophy, sure, but I can't help but love the hard guitar and drums.

"Suicide Blonde" - The Weepies

Suicide Blonde


I started this look with the Topshop chiffon blouse and it kind of developed from there. There's nothing too crazy happening here, I just really like combining the apricot and the olive colors as well as the contrast between the soft chiffon and the tough-chic Balmain leather pants. Marrying these two and adding the twee Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony platforms seems to embody The Weepies' song "Suicide Blonde". It's from their sophomore album "Say I Am You", and I always thought this song stuck out from the rest of the record. It has a harsher rock feel to it, incorporating a stronger percussion beat and some electric guitar, but you still get the folksy vocals and the acoustic guitar at the beginning. It's trying to be tough, but it's just too sweet to keep you convinced.

"Ribbon Bows" - Joshua James

Ribbon Bows

I was once asked how I felt about unrequited love, whether it was romantic or foolish. I chose foolish. I mean, sure, the idea is romantic, but when you are the holder of said unrequited love, it is consuming and doesn't make any sense and is the absolute worst. But despite knowing that it's hopeless and terrible feeling, you can't let it go. Because at the same time it's exhilarating and fun and beautiful.

I love Joshua James for his simple, melancholy sound. This song makes me think of unconditional, unrequited love and this is the look I pair with that feeling. Everything has been drained and exhausted, but it's still lovely - in a bittersweet sort of way. You feel like a little girl, even though you know better than to harbor such feelings. You simply wait for something to change.

"Snowfall" - Ingrid Michaelson

Snowfall

I'm from Minnesota. I've lived here for most of my life. So you can imagine my impatience when I hear everyone else in the country whine about snow. Sure, sure, they're not used to it so it's extra scary and they're unprepared I guess, but it is in my blood to order them to suck it up. Internally, of course. I never actually say the words to anyone out loud, because I don't want to get into an argument about who has worse weather, you know? It's a lame argument. And whoever wins actually loses.

Having gone to school in Chicago, many of my Facebook friends are still there, so my newsfeed today has been absolutely flooded with complaints, quips, and puns about the snow they've been receiving over the last 24 hours. Plus, I was awoken by the sound of a snowplow tearing up the lot behind my building this morning (immediately below my window that my head is next to, mind you), so it's completely natural and appropriate that today's post is dedicated to our wintery foe that is snow (I am a poet because that rhymed).


One of the things I love about Ingrid Michaelson is that she has songs that sound Christmas-y, but are actually just metaphors that involve winter, so I feel like I can indulge my crazy love of Christmas carols without feeling too crazy about it. The song "Snowfall" is simple and pretty, as is her style. I find myself sinking as I listen to it - sitting on a couch with a giant blanket gazing outside during a soft snowfall. It brings me back to when I was little and spent 90% of my days playing pretend and imagining when I would be in love. So it only makes sense that the focal point of this look is a Dior Girls dress. I make the look slightly more mature with an over-sized LOVE sweatshirt by Wildfox and some delightfully grown up Jeffrey Campbell wedges. Some knit accessories complete the outfit for a look that is effortlessly dreamy yet comfortable.

"I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" - Ida Maria

I have this thing for lingerie. That sounds way more interesting than it actually is. Simply put, I like pretty things (that's way less sexy, right? Sound like it came from a 5 year old? Or Taylor Swift? Just wanted to put it into perspective.). Any woman would agree that wearing pretty undies gives her a confidence boost, whether anyone else will see them or not. And what better to do the job than La Perla, really.

Ida Maria's "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" is one of my favorite songs to blast in the car. I love that's sort of crude yet vulnerable and almost painfully honest. I thought about toughening up the collage a bit, but I wanted to capture more of that vulnerability. And the crazy hot Charlotte Olympia platforms and red YSL lipstick adds that less-than-sweet piece.
