"Sweet Sour" - Band of Skulls

Sweet Sour

What do you call a more innocent version of a femme fatale? Like, someone that has just a bit of edge - not enough to be dangerous, but enough to be interesting - and still an undeniable adorability? I'm not sure exactly what she'd be called, but I do know that Band of Skulls' "Sweet Sour" would be her anthem and this would be her signature look.

This look appears almost preppy until you stop to notice the details: leather almost everywhere, sky-high Louboutins, accessories boasting a bit of hardware. This chick has layers. She is complex. She will keep you guessing and keep life exhilarating.

I love how this song is a bit reminiscent of 80's rock - the look is almost too tame for such a genre, but I think the added subtleties of the look make the pairing all the better. It makes the resulting personality of the wearer that much more surprising.

"King of Anything" - Sara Bareilles

wintery

I think this is such a kickass look. Not in the literal, if I wore this I'd be able to hurt you, kind of way (although I probably would if I stepped on you), but in the totally confident, send me any challenge and I'll crush it kind of way. A brocade minidress and fur boldly paired with some thick knit socks and badass leather half-gloves? It's beauty meets total toughness. Maybe not total toughness, but there's definitely a message of "go ahead and try me" here, and I love it. The wearer of this outfit trusts herself wholeheartedly and is self-reliant while still maintaining a careful attention to and appreciation for detail. She values what she has, because she's worked so hard to get it.

On my iPod, you'll find a "pump me up" playlist. I'm not talking about an exercise playlist, that's a separate one entitled "WORKOUT JAMZ". This is a playlist specifically for when I'm feeling sort of down and need a pick-me-up. First on that list is Sara Bareilles' "King of Anything". I absolutely love everything about that song. I love the melody and I love the message. It has a witty way of declaring independence: "I hate to break it to you, dear/but I'm not drowning/there's no one here to save". It's all about owning who you are and the choices you make and, not to get too cheesy, I think that's a fabulous statement to make.

"Suicide Blonde" - The Weepies

Suicide Blonde

I started this look with the Topshop chiffon blouse and it kind of developed from there. There's nothing too crazy happening here, I just really like combining the apricot and the olive colors as well as the contrast between the soft chiffon and the tough-chic Balmain leather pants. Marrying these two and adding the twee Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony platforms seems to embody The Weepies' song "Suicide Blonde". It's from their sophomore album "Say I Am You", and I always thought this song stuck out from the rest of the record. It has a harsher rock feel to it, incorporating a stronger percussion beat and some electric guitar, but you still get the folksy vocals and the acoustic guitar at the beginning. It's trying to be tough, but it's just too sweet to keep you convinced.

"Everywhere I Go" (Lissie)

Everywhere I Go

When I saw Lissie open for Ray LaMontagne at the State Theater in Minneapolis last December, I knew I would be a devoted fan. She performed this song solo with her acoustic guitar, and I immediately connected to it. The emotion is so strong and beautiful as she sings "angels will follow me now everywhere I go / angels will call on me and take me to my home". She filmed the music video while traveling with an elephant, and that video and the message of the song inspired this look. I listen to this song and imagine trudging through miles and miles to get to the ultimate destination.

I love the idea of juxtaposing this soft, flowing Acne gown with the roughness of the OASIS work boots and Helmut Lang jacket. Everything necessary to make the long journey is here, and the gown is there to remind you where you're going and why you're traveling.
